I've been missing writing while I've been busy using Tumblr, Pinterest & DJ-ing at KALX, so I'm sharing a written post here that I wrote for casasugar a little while back. I offer some advice/tips for achieving a celebrity home look in your own home (in a casasugar writing style).

I've been admiring "Modern Family" star Julie Bowen's LA house. Luckily for Julie, her sister, Molly Luetkemeyer is a talented interior designer with excellent taste and was able to showcase her design skills in the interior of Julie's swank house. Her place is handsomely-styled, but also appears to be a very livable and cheerful space for her to comfortably share with her family of five. Take a little tour with me to appreciate her style.

This mid-century home is decked out with of heavy dose of vintage furniture, mixed with some luxurious new pieces and highlighted with a fun array of global flair and psychedelic-printed textiles. The white walls and ample window light are the perfect complement to the bold use of color sprinkled throughout the house.

If you are as enamoured by the look of this chic house as I am, take a trip over to M. Design Interiors Inc (based out of LA) to see more of her sister Molly Luetkemeyer's work to get inspired.

If you'd like to achieve a similar look in your own interior, I'd suggest starting out by acquiring an elephant or two. It appears to be a recurring theme in Bowen's home. I found a similar white ceramic elephant available at Plantation Design.

Start scouring your local flea markets, ebay or craigslist to locate a round studded mirror like Bowen's or pick up a similar vintage one over at 1stdibs.com.

Barbara Cosgrove's table lamp is a dead ringer for the one that sits atop Bowen's blue Moroccan side table. Just be sure to top it off with a simple white lampshade.

Continuing with the global travel flair theme, you could add a similar Moroccan side table like Bowen's. Find yours without having to travel at Berber Decor.

If you don't want to hunt for your own vintage fabric, this adorable day bed will achieve a similar effect as the one pictured in the living room of Bowen's house.

West Elm has a strikingly similar rectangle table to the one pictured above in Bowen's dining area.

The overall look would not be complete without some red chairs like Bowen has in both her living and dining rooms. While these bright red glossy chairs are not vintage, they are a modern take on the Louis XV style chairs that Bowen has lined around her table.

Hopefully, you had a nice holiday weekend wherever you were, hot or not-so-hot (ahem bay area's mostly freezing cold summer). Despite some of the chilliness, I've been spending some quality time admiring bay area backyards & pretty public spaces. I've also been hanging out with charming pets (that I do not own). But mostly I've been eating lots of delicious food made by friends, that I did not have to cook (the best). Here's a little documentation of some of the prettiest highlights.

Remember my obsession with the eye motif a little while back? Well, you can imagine my delight when I saw British pop artist, Goldfrapp's awesome eye-looking stage set last night at the Fox Theatre in Oakland. The silvery, eyeball-looking material was a great back-drop for a light show. Photos of her three outfit changes are posted here, here and here.

Lotus Bleu is located in Hayes Valley of San Francisco and is a home design shop that carries many of my favorite brands, styles, candy-colored lacquered lamps, Madeline Weinrib rugs & graphic textiles. Check out this line of acrylic furniture & accessories that Alexandria Von Furstenburg has designed. It's all very glamourous and bold and comes in a rainbow of color selections, along with some less hot pink, more tame clear versions.

You can see it in real life in Yountville, CA at Ma(i)sonry Napa Valley or make the trek to her West Hollywood store.

Check out this limited edition tea pot set from Melbourne artist, Kat MacLeod (via Vogue Living Australia). The design is oh so fresh pink. They are currently on sale at the Heide Museum of Modern Art.

She also does lots of lovely, fashion-y illustrations. I would like to request a line of textiles from this talented lady. I can see it now!

I'm impressed with most of these spaces (with a couple of complaints here and there). I think that atmosphere and good interior design can really help make eating something delicious an even more exciting experience. A great deal of the appeal for me, regarding many of these spaces are that they all have nice blends of textures, unique architectural windows and layered lighting. It's very exciting how many nice new east bay spots are opening up, thriving and are continuing to sprout up. Got any other fresh food interiors tips for me?

Cork Mosaic Sideboard

This is by far my favorite furniture item that I am using in my mid-century ranch home project. I am using it for the entryway piece. And I must say, it would also look good in my own entryway!

It is a new design from Ianonne Design. The doors are inlaid with cork and it has a walnut base. Handsome. You can buy it for me here.

Tie dye on the runaway is all grown-up and looks modern, pretty & edgy in the 2010 Spring collections.

Coincidentally, the Interior Design world recently acquired some grown-up versions of the print designed for your walls. Maya Romanoff has created some fancy tie dye wallpaper for high-end hippies, design junkies and lovers of earthy prints. This wallpaper celebrates her 40th anniversary of her designs. It could be charming in the right space.

Oakland Museum of California

Over the weekend the Oakland Museum of California held all sorts of festivities to kick off their freshly renovated building site. I had a chance to take it all in yesterday. After spending $58,000 and closing it's doors to the public for two years, while they re-worked it, it's looking really fabulous. The weather yesterday was ideal for soaking up a little sun on their roof gardens. Here are a few of the highlights.

I apologize for not listing the artist credits for these images. You'll have to go visit for yourselves to figure out the details. The museum boasts to have the biggest collection of California-based art work anywhere. There's plenty for adults and kids of all ages to go and see. It makes me happy to live in Oakland, CA. It should make you happy to visit if you are curious about California history.

Wagiman Bubble Chair

I was looking for a clear bubble chair for the master bedroom of my ranch house project, when I stumbled on this LED illuminated crazy number. WOW.

It was designed by INSA x ROUSSEAU and before you click over there, I will forewarn you that their portfolio is kind of (sexy) hilarious and not suitable for viewing at work.

The chair is called the Wagiman and was made in a limited edition of ten, crafted from LED illuminated acrylic bubble with stainless steel ring and fixings. They say they are “Taking the classic retro fantasy of the bubble chair up to date with an illuminating twist.”

California Ranch Homes

My final project for my space planning class is to design a 1200 square foot (or smaller) renovated 60's era ranch-style house, including a elevation drawing of the front of the house. Here are some of the exterior inspiration images that I've been collecting. It's been fun.

Cliff May was responsible for getting the ranch house concept rolling in California back in 1931 and in later years, other architects followed suite. Joseph Eichler, a California real estate developer was responsible for building over 11,000 homes from 1947-1973, many of them in the ranch-style.

Fresh London Flat

I'm taking a study break to show off the bold, eclectic style of this London flat featured in the March issue of Vogue. It's a Victorian home that belongs to the design-savvy couple, Christopher and Suzanne Sharp and their three children. It's full of their treasures from their travels around the world, all tied together in a refreshing British style paired with fabulous rugs.

The couple previously lived in Malta and Uganda. They presently own the successful rug and limited-edition tapestries shop in London, the Rug Company. Their rug career started really taking off when they featured collaborations with British prominent interior designers, such as Nina Campbell, Nicholas Haslam and Mary Fox Linton. Their tapestries collections feature collaborations with freshpink favorite, Beatriz Milhaze, as well as other artists, Kara Walker, Shahzia Sikander and Gary Hume.

Fresh Loft Living

There was no lighting post today because for some reason there was no class today, which was lovely by me. This meant that I got to head to West Oakland for a new loft project that I am working on! I think it's going to be a lot of fun. The loft is already furnished but needs some space planning and some furniture skimming.

I took lots of photos of the existing space, but I feel strange posting the clients' "pre-photos" even though their space is already pretty great-looking, I'll save that for a later post or for my professional portfolio website revamp. Instead, in honor of loft living, here are a couple of images from one of my favorite home tours that was originally posted at Apartment Therapy ever! My only teeny tiny beef with this space is that zebra print ottoman.

This space is located in Durham, North Carolina, a town that I spent my elementary school years growing up in. It's a town where tobacco factories were abundant in the 80's and the smell of tobacco frequently sweetened the outdoor air. It sounds odd, but think UNBURNED tobacco and it's much better. Anyway, this particular loft is a converted Ligett and Meyers tobacco warehouse that belongs to savvy store owner, Heather Garett, who decorated the space. You can visit her store here.

It's yet another hump day that I'm sitting in Redwood City looking out the window at the clouds, waiting for my lighting class to start.

Today, I've been sourcing furniture and fixtures for my upcoming space planning class project. I'm designing a small apartment for a local fashion designer, who's style is very rock n' roll, which is making this project particularly fun.

I think these strange, but cool pendant lamps from Sarah Cihat are going to be perfect for the look of the space. Cihat paired up with designer, Michael Miller to create her "Taken" line. I only wish I could see a room shot of them to get a better idea.

It's such crazy news that one the edgiest talents of the fashion world is no longer with us. While everything he did was always amazing and inspiring, one of favorite pairings was his styling of Bjork for her 1997 album cover, Homogenic. He will be truly missed, as the fashion world seems very boring without him.

Yes, it's Wednesday and I've been sitting around killing time before my lighting class, but I've been busy with things other than lighting musings. However, I took at peak into my "lighting folder" and here's a little hot pink pendant icon, the flowerpot.
It would probably work best in a commercial space, but it could be nice in just the right rock star-worthy residential home, as well. Designed by Verner Panton, 1969, crafted out of pink aluminum. Available at bouf, a UK store.

I recently lost a big library of music, due to our house getting broken into in January and our laptops walking out the door, which was a drag. Since I have been low on music reserves, I've been scrounging to replenish tunes in anyway possible. I downloaded the latest Urban Outfitters download and the stand-out track for me was this artist, Tamaryn.

She's relocated to San Francisco from New York. I've been telling folks she sounds like a slow version of Joan Jett, mixed with a little Stevie Nicks and some Siouxie Sioux with My Bloody Valentine, as the backing band. I keep hearing about this on KALX and it's almost over! There's only one more weekend of the exhibition "When Lives Become Form: Contemporary Brazilian Art, 1960's to the Present" at the Yerba Center for the Arts. It was organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo and it features the Tropicália artistic movement, profiling fashion, architecture, and culture. I've yet to see it. I gotta jam over there before it ends January 31st!

I see they have some Beatriz Milhazes on display! She's one of my favorites.

Rainy Day Oakland Pride

Yesterday, on our way into the Warriors vs. Bulls game, I spotted this custom Oakland Raiders van in the coliseum parking lot. I was impressed. Perhaps, you might be too?

After the game, stuck in the traffic pile-up in the parking lot, I spied a teeny sliver of rainbow, celebrating the Golden State team's victory. Can you spot it? Go Warriors.

Last week, we spent an afternoon in Point Reyes Station. My wish to visit Osteria Stellina finally came true. We had these tasty treats pictured below (plus some Hog Island oysters that failed to get their own photo because they got gobbled).

We stopped by Toby's Feed Barn and admired the pretty produce.

They have a nice little coffee shack across from the Barn.

We also enjoyed stopping by the floral shop, Flower Power. The store was filled with beautiful flowers, linens, vases, jewelry, etc. and the backyard patio spot was cute.

Best of all this sunset guided back through Marin County.

It was a fresh afternoon and the calm before the storm.

General Store

This cute new store that opened in San Francisco in early December has caught my eye. It's called General Store. The shop features both new and vintage items. These images of the interior are so fresh, I thought it would be nice to spread the word.

It's run by Serena Mitnik Miller (who's quaint little beach bungalow I've seen featured in *Apartment Therapy before) and Mason St. Peter.

The General Store website looks like it will evolve, but it is currently pretty minimal. In the meantime, you can go check it out, it's located at 4035 Judah Street, San Francisco, CA 94122.

Daiso Japan

What you just see above is the result of me going a little camera phone crazy at a Japanese import store in Daly City. I spent about an hour in this store, but I still did not even begin capture all the goodness and funny Japan product weirdness.

For a long time now, I've been meaning to go check this Japanese import store, Daiso Japan. Yesterday, I finally had a little free time while I was in the neighborhood to check it out throughly.

It was a wonderland of cute, cheap-o stuff and all priced around $1.50! It's a great place to hit up for inexpensive stocking stuffers. Next week, when I am in the neighborhood, I'm definitley returning. It would also be a great place to get unusual & cute party supplies.

This past weekend we drove up to see a limited time folk rock group play in Mendocino County at the Caspar Inn. It was the perfect overnighter Fall adventure.(poster art by Nat Russell)

I'm looking forward to seeing this film that is screening in Berkeley, starting tomorrow, November 6th.
The film profiles the life and work of Julius Shulman, who was an American architectural photographer that passed away earlier this year.

Shulman's career started in the 1930's, documenting the work of many progressive architects, such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Richard Neutra, John Lautner and Frank Gehry. His visual work helped these great architects gain mass recognition through his imagery. The film is narrated by Dustin Hoffman. It shows for one week at Shattuck Cinemas.

Spotted this image over at City Sage from an Australia Vogue Living shoot. Since it's got such nice flecks of pink and carries on with yesterday's ethnic textiles musings, I could not resist re-posing. There's a lot I love about this image, with the woodie ceiling, different kind of thick woodie table, pink flowers, city view, even the weird light fixture works. Then what I love most-of-all is the collage-y looking ethnic print rug. So pretty! Vogue Living is my current top shelter magazine, too bad it's an import.

A couple of weekends ago we rented a house at Muir Beach from a sweet, earthy, midwife lady named, Yeshi. Her house was filled with all sorts of mementos from her world travels. One of her treasures that I thought was particularly striking was this beautiful suzani textile hanging on the wall. Suzani has been hot topic in design circles for the past couple of years, along with a renewed interest in ikat fabrics. I love both styles of fabric and am happy that they are currently en vogue. I like them best in moderation and in unexpected places. You can see below there was a lot more going on at Yeshi's place, textile-wise. Pink Kitchen

How about a light pink Swedish kitchen to brighten up the rainy, dark Monday in the bay area today? I've been working on a couple of kitchen designs lately and I've been browsing through endless kitchens and I stumbled on this one at Hus & Hem recently. Doesn't she look like she's having fun in the kitchen?

This morning I drove out to the Viking Showroom in Hayward and looked at all sorts of cool kitchen vignettes. It confirmed what I thought about the preferred American palette and tastes. Americans usually lean towards safe neutrals in their homes and especially in their kitchens. A pink kitchen like this one would never fly with your typical American client.

Viking carries some bright orange and red appliance finishes, but the majority of Americans tend to not decorate their homes this way, especially with semi-permanent fixtures for the home. I don't think I could live with a pink kitchen myself, but it made me smile to see these folks living happily in one!

Glow Bowls

Local artist and potter, Diana Fayt has created these hanging bowls that GLOW, with the help of little votive candles placed inside! I just noticed these little lovelies today browsing through Etsy. Here's the night time view!

Since I'm pretty much out of wall space, the only place to go is hanging things from the ceiling. Brilliant. They are for sale at her shop OneBlackBird.

alexander mcqueen

This one is worthy of its own post. Mr. McQueen has created a magnificent collection, a true work of art. The show itself looked spectacular, with two cameras rolling on tracks, sometimes filming into the screen to create a runway that went into space forever. The theme, "Plato's Atlantis," was introduced with footage of naked women being encircled by serpants in a deep lapis blue light. Very Roxy Music circa-Siren era. Then the show began–the models, heads adorned with ram-like horns very reminiscent of Matthew Barney Cremaster, started to walk out on the craziest shoes I have ever seen. And I thought my 3 1/2" heels were hard to walk in, try 10"!! I love the other-worldly pleating, wrapping mixed with the most amazing prints I have ever seen. I could go on and on, but witness the spectacle for yourself...

spring rtw 2010 / paris

A few days ago after the end of NYFW and after seeing the first shows of Paris I was lamenting to the fresh one about how uninspired I was about everyone's spring collection. Usually there are a few wow moments for me, but I just wasn't feelin' it this year, ya know? I mean yeah, Rodarte was amazing as always and there were a few double-look-worthy pieces by Bernard Willhelm and Chisato Tsumori, but no one collection/uber-vision was bowling me over.

Then Paris really got started and now I've seen a couple collections that are really praise-worthy. Thank you Valentino and Phoebe Philo/Celine! I love the architectural lines of the Celine collection and never knew that leather could look so damn beautiful. Valentino never ceases to amaze, and no one can drape fabric on a woman like he can.

I've been meaning to post these cool Kokeshi dolls and trees crafted by Oakland artist, Mark Giglio. I've seen his wallpaper in the past, but I did not realize that he also makes these sweet looking guys and trees out of scrap wood. I think Giglio's wooden dolls have a Girard quality to them, which is never a bad thing in my book!
